Make a Difference Day
What is the Volunteers in Action Make a Difference Day?
Each year volunteers with Volunteers in Action join with thousands of other volunteers throughout the United States to do projects which benefit a neighborhood or group in need.
In the past Volunteers in Action has:
- Repaired homes and spruced up neighborhoods in West Denver in partnerships with Westside Christian Community Builders.
- Helped refurbish an older motel to be used as a be transitional housing program, Joshua Station of Mile High Ministries.
- Installed all new siding on the Khmer Christian Reformed Church building in Aurora, CO
- Fixed-up, remodeled, and landscaped 4 group homes for developmentally disabled with Round-up Fellowship in Denver.
Hope and Healing on Osceola Street: 2005 Make a Difference Day
On Saturday, Oct. 23, Volunteers in Action partnered with Westside Christian Community Builders to Make-A-Difference at the 100 block of Osceola Street. Forty-five Volunteers in Action volunteers joined with the neighborhood, Westside Christian Church and others to bring hope and healing to a neighborhood which had suffered violence and hurt in the last year.
Volunteers painted homes, worked on landscaping yards, fixed fences, decks, doors, windows, trimmed trees, and other improvements. Altogether 6 homes were refurbished on the block.
This event also included a block wide barbeque, a Christian praise band, words of appreciation from neighbors and civic leaders, and a fund-raiser for the family whose children had been hit by stray bullets this summer. Bringing healing to a block that has suffered a lot of hurt was a deeply rewarding experience to many who were involved.
